Program Information

ski team group

The PEI Alpine Ski Team follows the AIM 2 WIN guidelines for development of ski racers as set out by Alpine Canada (https://alpinecanada.org/). Alpine Canada aims to ensure that any child entering the alpine ski racing system is provided with the necessary building blocks to reach the highest level of achievement in our sport.

The AIM 2 WIN guide was developed by Alpine Canada as a long-term skier development plan for coaches, managers, administrators, parents, teachers and volunteers. The plan breaks down development into seven stages and provides training strategies and progressions for future elite athletes. AIM 2 WIN should be used by all clubs across the country as a pathway to success for young skiers.

Junior Development (U8 - U10)

Junior Development is offered to skiers between the ages of 6 - 9 years of age.  The program is designed to help develop fundamental movement and skiing skills in fun, structured and unstructured environments. Providing fun, inclusive and developmentally appropriate physical activity experiences will promote the development of a child's confidence and desire to ski. Skiers at this stage are focused on developing technical skiing skills in a wide variety of training and competition environments.

The program begins Jan. 7, 2025 with training scheduled the following times:

  • Tuesday 6:00 - 8:00pm (Athletes only on the hill)
  • Either Saturday or Sunday 9:00am - 1:00pm

The Junior Development team typically participate in one off-island race each year.  Additionally there will be one race held at Mark Arendz park each year open to athletes from across the Atlantic provinces.

To be eligible for the program, athletes must be at least 6 years of age on Dec. 31, 2024.  Skiers must have a keen interest in developing to ski racing and be able to safely ski down the Flying Circus unassisted.

Development Team U12 - U14

The Development Team is designed to bridge the gap between basic skiing skills and the advanced gate racing techniques needed to be a successful racer. It introduces general fitness for ski racing through a dry land training program. There is more emphasis on development and less on race days. The theory is that by building a strong foundation, more athletes will meet with success when the focus shifts to performance at races.

This program is open to athletes 10-13 years of age who have successfully achieved a strong skiing level.  The program consists of approximately 12 weeks of dry land training and 10 weeks on-snow training. Additionally, there will be two races.  For athletes who are 10-11 years of age, there will be one off island race and one on-island race.  Since the on island race is open only to U12 and under, for any Development team athletes who are 12 and 13 years of age, they will participate in two off-island races.

The program begins Jan. 7, 2025 with training scheduled the following times:

  • Tuesday 6:00 - 8:30pm (Athletes only on the hill)
  • Saturday 9:00am - 1:00pm
  • Sunday 9:00am - 1:00pm

Race Team U16 - U18

The PEI Alpine Race Team consists of athletes between the ages of 14 - 18 years of age.  Enrolment in the program is based on skier ability; this is at the coach’s discretion.

The program consists of approximately 12 weeks of dry-land training and 12 weeks of on-snow training. Additionally, there will be approximately 3 to 4 off-island races and 2 or 3 off-island training camps.  Racers will compete in the Atlantic Alpine Association race circuit at hills across the Atlantic Provinces.

Dryland training begins in September.  There are typically two off island camps prior to the New Year.  Regular on snow program begins Jan. 7, 2025 with training scheduled the following times:

  • Tuesday 6:00 - 9:00pm (Athletes only on the hill)
  • Saturday 9:00am - 2:00pm
  • Sunday 9:00am - 2:00pm
